![]() Some fighters have lengthy amateur careers and some don't, so styles vary widely. Fun fighter to watch.Īmericans come in all sorts. He'll lead with a jab or a throw away cross and follow up with short combos every exchange. Every time he gets thrown at he slips and counters with 3-4 punch combos in short compact hooks. A good young fighter that really fits the this mold is Antonio Orozco. Watch Barrera/Morales for a great example. When you match two of them together they make for exciting fights because both guys will be throwing combinations at eachother at the same time every exchange. These guys epitomize the style which I think is distinguished by highly technical leading and countering in combination every exchange (lead with a jab or a slip followed by three to four punch combos), high volume, and committing to the body in the early rounds. When I hear "Mexican Style" I think of fighters like Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barerra, Finito Lopez. One thing I've always been curious about is whether Japanese referees are more reluctant to stop fights, but alas I've no tools to research such a thing. This may be reflective of their national culture, but I can't speak too much to it as I'm not Japanese. Not necessarily a 'style' of boxing per se, but one thing I've noticed which hasn't been mentioned thus far is that Japanese fighters tend to go out on their shields. This may or may not change the further we get away from the Cold War and the men who taught, and learned to box, within its context. Sports like hockey and basketball were also affected. ![]() This goes beyond just boxing, by the way. This is because both, during the Cold War, had athletes largely managed through government-run "mills" where everything was done according to very limited teachings (read: lack of diversity in available coaching). Notably, Eastern Europe/Cuba having similar styles. The styles are stereotypes, but there can be a great deal of truth to them.
